What is the best way to exercise?
As I professional fitness instructor I have often been asked "What is the best why to exercise?" Some people may have heard that swimming is the best way to exercise. Some folks have heard that cross country skiing is the best form of exercise. There have been many types of exercise that are said to be "the best". So what is the answer? Well, if you don't know how to swim or you live in Florida where is never snows then swimming and cross country skiing are not going to do you any good. For some people running will work great but if your "attitude" is that you hate to run, or the impact of running causes you phyical problems, then that won't do either. In my opinion the best form of exercise is to do some form of physical activity that you enjoy. Enjoying the activity is vital because to really benefit from your exercise then you have to do it on a regular basis. It you don't enjoy it then you won't do it regularly and then you get no fitness benefits. The key is to find something that you will maintain. Being consistent is very important. Often a moderate amount of exercise is much better then trying to maintain a long and elaborate workout program. Trying to do too much can lead to being burned out, injury or just plain quitting. I once read about a man in New Hampshire who loved to hike and he lived near a mountain. He climbed that mountain every single day for years. Certainly this man got in great shape! While this is certainly not for everyone, it was just right for this person. Fitness great Jack Lalane often says that you should change your workout program every few weeks so you do not get stale or bored. That is probably an excellent idea. Another thing to think about is your attitude toward exercise. If you think it is boring and distasteful then it is. It you find it fun, challenging and invigorating then it is. Your attitude is very important so this is something you will have to think about and possibly adjust. From a general fitness standpoint then the ideal workout problam will target the two main aspects of fitness. These two aspects would be aerobic endurance activities and muscle strengthening anaerobic exercise. Moderate amounts of both types of exercise will yield better results in the long run. For more details on both types of exercise you may want to visit SuperMuscular.com and SuperFitnessForever.com So remember that the best way to get good results in the long run is to have a workout program that you enjoy, that you can maintain and that provides overall (strength and endurance) benefits.
